What is Lichen Sclerosus?@headingTag>
Our board-certified Austin, TX dermatologists offer compassionate care to individuals with skin conditions that can cause a disruption in life. Lichen sclerosus, a skin condition, that if not addressed, can lead to long-term problems, mostly seen in women and includes small white, shiny spots on the skin that can grow and become larger and widespread. These small growths commonly appear in post-menopausal women and can appear on the arms or upper body, but also can affect the genital area, which is why the condition is known as a vulvar disorder. If not treated, these spots can turn into bigger plaques, can tear the skin, and cause itching, bleeding, and inflamed blisters. This condition is not contagious and while it can go away on its own in some cases, treatment is usually required and recommended.
What Causes Lichen Sclerosus?@headingTag>
During your appointment with our dermatology center, we will ask for a medical history and do a complete examination to determine your diagnosis and the extent of the condition. The cause is somewhat unknown but researchers believe it may be the result of hormonal imbalances or an overactive immune system. For these reasons, this condition is uncommon among children and men.
"I've been a patient at Snyder Dermatology for about a year and a half. The second you walk into the Louis Henna location, you are greeted with a warm welcome. I really love that I can call the office and be seen by Dr. Cervantes within a week and a half or less. The staff is respectful of your time, and you can expect to spend little to no time in the waiting room before being called back. Dr. Cervantes is absolutely amazing, and really takes the time to diagnose you properly. She is friendly, professional, and extremely competent. I had a bad rash on my skin that I had confused for acne. She was able to properly diagnose me and my skin is back to being as smooth as a baby's bottom! There is also a wide array of cosmetic services offered at the office at competitive prices. They also offer samples of cleansers, creams, etc. which is really a great bonus."- C.P. / Google / Feb 28, 2019

"Just had my first Microneedling done today and so far I love the results! Susan was very attentive and walked me through each step of the way. I highly recommend Snyder Dermatology Round Rock. I can't wait for to finish my next two sessions to see the final result."- D.O. / Yelp / Apr 11, 2019
"If I could give more than 5 stars I would. This has been a difficult, embarrassing and just a little scary journey for me. I was referred to Dr Snyder for a complete skin exam where we talked about a spot I had noticed that Dr Snyder biopsied and determined was basal cell carcinoma. Another appointment was made with her colleague, Dr. Dietert. Long story short. Dr. Dietert performed the procedure this morning, showing up on time. Her assistant was amazing and professional in every way. They both made this whole thing NOT SUCK as much as it might have. They were both very relaxed, informative and professional. The office environment was spotless and the patient waiting room was comfortable and accommodating. Dr. Dietert performance was spot on, removing all those nasty cancer cells on the first procedure, making my total in-office rime less than 2 hours. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your compassion, professionalism and kindness to the entire staff. Also helped you sharing the parking lot with Deckhands, the best seafood joint in the area. Cudos!!!!"- J.M. / Yelp / Apr 11, 2019

How to Treat Lichen Sclerosus@headingTag>
In most cases, if the patches of red scales and spots appear on the upper body, such as the arms, treatment is usually not needed and the symptoms go away on their own. However, if the condition appears within the genital region, treatment should be sought even if the patches do not cause an issue. Without treatment, they can worsen and interfere with sexual intercourse, urination, or possibly turn into a skin cancer. Treatment usually includes a strong prescription ointment or cortisone cream, which helps stop any itching. Surgical removal can also be considered, but in many cases, once the lesions are removed, there is a chance they can come back. Our doctors will assess your diagnosis and provide a treatment plan that is effective, as well as helps prevent the condition from recurring.
While lichen sclerosus can be treated, if left alone, it could turn into skin cancer. While the condition itself doesn't lead to cancer, the affected skin is at risk. This is especially seen among women where the condition forms on the vulva, which could develop into vulvar cancer. Severe lichen sclerosus can create a number of painful symptoms for women, thus we recommend treatment as soon as symptoms appear.
